Level 5 Drywall Tools: The Complete Kit List for a Level 5 Finish

A Level 5 finish is a full skim coat over the entire wall after standard taping, so nothing telegraphs through paint under raking light. It's specified for glossy or dark paint, high-end residential and anywhere with big windows. The technique is simple; the tools decide whether it takes one pass or four. Here's the complete Level 5 drywall tool list, in the order you'll use it, with what to skip.
The Level 5 tool list
1. Skimming blades (the core of the kit)
This is the tool that separates a Level 5 crew from a Level 4 crew with a bigger sanding budget. A wide, thin stainless blade pulls compound flat across the whole wall in long strokes, feathering its own edges. You want three widths:
- 24" — walls, butt joints, closets, around windows. The everyday size.
- 32" — open walls in roughly half the passes of a taping knife.
- 40" — ceilings and commercial flats on a pole.
Thickness matters more than brand: 0.3 mm blades chatter and flex, leaving lines you sand out later; 0.5 mm blades hold their angle. The PLONIC 6-Piece Kit covers 6"–40" with spare inserts and a pole in one case, which is the fastest way to build the set.
2. Extension pole
Ceilings and the top third of every wall. A telescopic pole with a positive lock (40–84" is the useful range) and a blade adapter that doesn't wobble. Skipping the pole means a ladder for every ceiling pass.
3. A roller for loading mud
Most production finishers roll thinned compound onto the wall with a 3/4" nap roller, then pull it flat with the blade. It's faster than loading the blade from a pan and gives an even film thickness. A 9" frame with a heavy nap is fine; keep a roller screen in a 5-gallon bucket.
4. Mixing drill and paddle
Level 5 compound is thinned to a thick-paint consistency, and it has to be lump-free or the blade drags every lump into a line. A 1/2" drill with a mud paddle and a 5-gallon bucket. Ratios are in our mud consistency guide.
5. Taping knives (6", 10", 12")
Still needed for the taping and second-coat stages before the skim. A 6" for bedding tape, a 10"–12" for fill coats. They're not skim coat tools; they're what comes before.
6. Small skimming blade (10"–16")
For patches, inside corners, above doors and around outlets, where a 24" won't fit. Same 0.5 mm steel so the texture matches the big blades. The 16" blade or the 10"/16" in the 3-piece set.
7. Sanding — as little as possible
With a 0.5 mm blade and two passes, a Level 5 surface needs a light pass with a 220-grit sanding sponge or a pole sander, not a machine. If you're sanding hard, the blade or the mud is wrong. See sanding alternatives.
8. Lighting
A raking light — a work light set low and angled across the wall — shows every ridge before paint does. Non-negotiable for Level 5 inspection, and the cheapest tool on this list.
9. High-build Level 5 primer
The last "tool." A high-build primer evens out the porosity difference between compound and paper so the topcoat sheen reads flat. Roll or spray; our primer guide covers both.
What you can skip
- A plaster trowel and hawk. Fine for plaster; in joint compound the rigid edge leaves trowel marks. A skimming blade replaces both.
- A texture sprayer. Rolling mud is faster to set up for anything under a whole house, and the finish is the same once the blade goes over it.
- Power sanders. If the skim is right, you won't need one.

Frequently asked questions
What's the most important Level 5 tool?
The wide skimming blade. Everything else on the list supports it. A 0.5 mm 24" or 32" blade is the difference between two passes and four.
Do I need special compound for Level 5?
No. All-purpose or topping compound thinned to a heavy-paint consistency. Some crews use a high-build primer as the "final coat" instead of a third pass.
Can I do Level 5 with taping knives only?
You can, but a 12" knife leaves a ridge at each edge every 12", and you'll sand for a day. That's why skimming blades exist.
How many coats is a Level 5 finish?
Standard taping and two fill coats (Level 4), then one full skim coat over everything — two thin skim passes if the wall is rough. Full walkthrough: What Is a Level 5 Drywall Finish?
