Getting the mud estimate right before a job saves you a second trip to the supply house — and keeps your schedule intact. Whether you're finishing a 400 sq ft bedroom repair or a 4,000 sq ft new build, the same math applies: total area × coats × a coverage factor that accounts for waste and technique variation.
How the Calculator Works
Standard joint compound covers roughly 50–60 sq ft per gallon at typical coat thickness. A 4.5-gallon bucket holds approximately 45 lbs of premixed mud (or 50 lbs powder for setting-type). All-Purpose vs Lightweight vs Topping vs Hot Mud
Not all joint compound is the same. Choosing the wrong type won't ruin the job, but it will slow you down or cost you extra passes. Here's when each type makes sense:
The most versatile option. Works for taping, topping, and texture coats. Slower dry time (18–24 hrs) but very forgiving. Good default for DIY and most residential jobs.
About 30% lighter than all-purpose with easier sanding. A favorite among pro finishers for second and third coats. Shrinks slightly more — factor in an extra skim pass on larger areas.
Fine-grained, low-shrink formula for final coats and skim work. Not for tape embedding. Gives the smoothest surface under paint and reduces finishing passes when used correctly.
Chemical-set powder that hardens in 20–90 minutes regardless of humidity. Use for first coat on heavy taping, repairs, and when you can't wait for drying. Can't re-wet once set.
Pro tip: Many finishers use hot mud for the tape coat to cut a full day off the schedule, then switch to lightweight all-purpose for second and third coats. This combination gives you fast setting on the tape bed with easy sanding on the finish passes.
