Description

PLONIC 24" Round-Grip Skimming Blade — All-Aluminum, One-Piece

This is the tough one. Instead of a stainless insert in a housing, the Round-Grip 24" is extruded as a single piece of aluminum: body, edge and handle together, with nothing to loosen, shift or rattle. It survives being dropped off a bench, rinses clean in seconds, and the round wraparound grip lets you steer long knockdown and skim passes with your whole hand instead of your fingertips.

It is the blade to reach for on knockdown texture, ceiling smoothing and rough first skim coats where a thin stainless edge would be overkill and a taping knife is too narrow.

Why pros pick the Round-Grip

  • One-piece extruded aluminum — rigid across the full 24", no end caps, no insert to work loose
  • Round-grip handle — secure wraparound hold, less hand fatigue on big surfaces
  • Jobsite-proof — shrugs off drops and rinses clean with water
  • Straight, true edge — flattens knockdown and orange peel without gouging
  • Lightweight — aluminum end to end, easy to run overhead

Best for

  • Knockdown and texture smoothing
  • First-pass skim coats on rough walls
  • Ceilings and long overhead runs
  • Crews that want a blade they don't have to baby

Frequently asked questions

Aluminum blade or stainless blade — which should I buy?
Stainless (our Professional and Pro-Series blades) gives the smoothest final skim coat and a replaceable edge. All-aluminum is stiffer and tougher, which makes it the better choice for knockdown, texture smoothing and rough first coats.

Is the edge replaceable?
No. The blade and body are one extruded piece, which is what makes it so rigid and durable.

Will it rust?
No. Aluminum does not rust; rinse it after use and it will look the same for years.

Setup & care

Snug the end-cap screws before each job. Rinse under running water before the mud sets, wipe the edge dry, store flat or in the case. Swap inserts when the edge is worn — loosen the caps, slide out, slide in, snug down.

Excellent 24 Inch Drywall Skimmer, Bigger Really Is Better

I am slowly becoming a skimming expert, mostly because I have had no choice. My condo was built in the mid 1980s and a lot of the walls still had the original wallpaper on them. My wife and I have been removing it little by little, only to discover that whoever installed the wallpaper apparently decided that drywall needed absolutely no protection whatsoever. The wallpaper was applied directly to the drywall without a skim coat, primer, or any kind of protective layer between the paper and the wallpaper.

Naturally, removing that wallpaper has taken a fair amount of the drywall paper with it, leaving gouges, torn areas, and plenty of imperfections that have to be repaired. In some cases I have had to replace sections of drywall, and in others I have had to seal the exposed fibers with the appropriate products before moving forward. After that, the next logical step is skim coating the entire wall, which I have now had to do on every surface where I have removed wallpaper.

I already have a very nice 18 inch drywall skimmer, and it works quite well. I have always looked at the larger 20 plus inch skimmers, though, because when you are working on a large wall, bigger really does seem to be better. That is why I was particularly excited to get this 24 inch model.

One of my favorite ways to skim coat is to use an old paint roller to spread the joint compound across the wall and then come back with a good skimming blade to flatten everything out. With a 24 inch blade, I can cover considerably more area with each pass and hopefully get a smoother finish with less work. I also prefer doing multiple thinner coats rather than trying to make one heavy coat do everything, and a large skimmer like this makes that process much easier.

The construction of this particular skimmer is excellent. The entire body and blade are made from extruded aluminum, and the rigidity is immediately apparent when you hold it. There is essentially no flex in the blade, which is exactly what you want when you are trying to pull joint compound tight across a large wall. A flexible blade can create uneven pressure and make getting a flat finish considerably more difficult.

The round handle is probably my favorite design feature. Most drywall skimmers I have used have a thin square style handle that can become uncomfortable after a while. This one has a full round aluminum handle that fits naturally into the palm and gives you a much better grip. It also distributes the pressure across your hand instead of concentrating it against your fingers, which should reduce hand fatigue during longer jobs.

Everything about it feels like a professional piece of equipment rather than a cheap DIY tool. The blade is straight and precisely machined, the handle is comfortable, and the sealed end caps should keep joint compound out of the body while also making cleanup easy. From what I can see, you should be able to rinse this thing off quickly once you are finished working.

The 24 inch size is definitely the main attraction for me. When you are skimming a large wall, covering more surface area with each pass makes the process much more efficient, and it should help reduce the amount of unnecessary sanding afterward. If you are doing level 5 type finishing work or simply trying to get a very flat surface before painting, I think the rigidity and width of this blade are major advantages.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with it. The design is excellent, the construction is excellent, and the size is exactly what I have been looking for. If you are doing a lot of drywall finishing, plaster work, or large skim coating projects, I think this is a very worthwhile tool to have. It is also reasonably priced considering the size and construction. In my experience with skimming, bigger really is better, and this 24 inch skimmer is exactly the kind of tool I would recommend for tackling large walls efficiently and getting a smooth, professional looking finish.

Nice finish pass

This skimmer has a very nice comfortable curved hand grip with a very long, smooth straight edge. That’s 24 inches long. Blade itself is a little bit shorter and has a square edge on the sides. This does allow for a lot more of a strong pressured pass. It has some grooves in the handle that make it a little bit difficult to keep all of it cleaned out nicely, but it still can get done as long as you’re keeping it cleaned off before it dries in there.

Very nice design.

Although packaged fairly well, mine came with a scratch, which I found odd, because I think that happened at the factory. Doesn't really matter since this is going to lose it new look quickly. Yeah, it is a very nice mud trowel, though, I do like the two-/multi-handed approach, which helps a lot to control one this size. Very nice design.

Smooth and Solid Drywall Skimming Blade

This 24-inch all-aluminum skimming blade feels rigid and well-balanced in the hand. The one-piece extruded metal construction gives it a solid, professional weight without feeling heavy, and the round grip handle sits comfortably during long sessions. The blade edge is straight and clean, making it easy to spread compound evenly across walls and ceilings with minimal effort.
The look is clean and no-nonsense, with a matte black finish that resists fingerprints and holds up well to job-site use. Quality is clear in the rigid body that doesn’t flex or twist under pressure, and the materials feel durable enough for repeated knockdown and smoothing work. Setup is straightforward—just load the compound and go.
At this price the value is excellent. You get a sturdy, well-made tool that delivers smooth results without the flex or cheap feel of lighter blades. It is worth every penny for anyone doing drywall finishing.

One Piece Aluminum Drywall Skimming Blade

My husband does remodeling for a living and with absolutely thrilled with this drywall skimming blade. This is a one piece, all aluminum blade which he says makes it much better. I take it that it is stronger. He has bought this brand before and always thinks they have high quality tools.

Finally a straight, undamaged blade!

So far, I’m impressed with this skimming blade. We’re having to skim coat most of the walls in our fixer upper and this is my 4th blade. The others all arrived with little nicks in the blade, except the 18” which I find to be just a bit too small. If there’s a nick, it’s useless. It was infuriating. Do I buy more replacement blades? What do I do if those arrived messed up too? It seemed like an endless cycle of buying and returning replacement blades. I stayed away from the one pieces simply because I didn’t want to have to throw the entire thing away if it was warped or nicked but, not having luck with the other blades, I thought I’d give this a shot. So far, it’s definitely my favorite! The handle is round, unlike the others I own and it feels like it sits better in my hands. It’s very lightweight too. The blade part looks perfectly straight and in perfect shape. You can’t even begin to imagine how happy that made me! I injured my wrist a couple weeks ago but as soon as it’s better, it’s back to work on the walls. I’ll update the review after I actually get to use it but I have high hope for this one!

Ergonomic and a well designed skimming blade.

Using the 24" drywall skimming blade makes drywall finishing much easier and quicker with such a simple but effective tool. The ergonomics of the blade are on point and it helps reduce hand fatigue and make it easy to distribute an equal amount of pressure across the tool.

Overall the tool is made with quality in mind, the blade is thick giving it firmness and the edges are squared off, which I personally found helpful especially in corners. Great tool and it has helped me a lot to get better results, and also making the skimming process quicker.
