Why replace the insert instead of the blade

The housing on a PLONIC skimming blade is aircraft-grade aluminum and lasts for years of daily use. Only the steel edge wears: it picks up nicks from screw heads and corner bead, dulls on aggressive mud, and eventually takes a set that won't sit flat. A fresh insert restores the flex and the glass-smooth Level 5 glide for a fraction of the cost of a new tool, with nothing going in the bin but a strip of steel.

How to swap an insert

1. Rinse the blade and pull the end caps off the housing.
2. Slide the worn insert out and wipe the channel clean.
3. Slide the new insert in until it seats evenly at both ends.
4. Press the end caps back on and check the edge sits flat against a straightedge.

When it's time

Replace the insert when you see nicks or dings that cleaning won't fix, when the edge has gone dull or uneven, when the steel has taken a bend that won't sit flat, or when rust spots persist after a proper clean. Everything else is a cleaning problem: see our blade care guide.
