Streaks from a skimming blade are one of the most frustrating problems in drywall finishing. 1. Mud Consistency Is Off
This is the most common cause of streaks that finishers don’t immediately think of. If your compound is too thick, it doesn’t shear cleanly under the blade — it drags in uneven ribbons and the blade leaves ridges rather than a smooth skim. If it’s too thin, you’re spreading a watery slurry that shrinks unevenly and pulls away from the blade’s edge contact zone.
Fix: Your skim coat compound should be the consistency of thick yogurt — not sour cream, not pancake batter. Mix it, let it sit for five minutes, then check it again. 5. Uneven or Inconsistent Pressure
